I live for visitors

We have been going constantly for the last week. Mom and Ben came for a little visit. They were here for Alyssa's first birthday. We went to Longwood Gardens and had a little hot dog and cake party that night for dinner.

We went to DC. We saw the temple and about everything else you can see in DC....I haven't quite mastered how to take people there yet. Oh well. It was overall an enjoyable experience. Alyssa liked her Oreos (Lauren, did you teach her that?) and apparently that is the only picture I took there!

We also went to NYC (just go here this morning). It was a fun day. We took Megabus, which I would recommend. It avoids the parking. We rode the subway. We had some pizza and ate at the Shake Shack. We saw the 9/11 Memorial, which was sobering. But we also saw the new WTC or the Freedom Tower with a HUGE blast wall at the bottom. It was pretty amazing. We went to the Brooklyn Bridge and saw Times Square. I had a little bit of a stiff neck and back. I didn't realize that it would show up in our pictures, but indeed, in my picture in front of the Newsies sign you can see almost all of the tendons in my neck. Maybe I was a little bit tense...

I'm always glad when visitors come and I'm so glad we had such a fun time. I'm waiting for the next one...any takers (cla cough ire). Stay tuned and find out where we are going to live this summer because as we all know, staying in Newark would be too easy!

And then she was one

"the days are long but the weeks are short..."

That is what Tammy told me. That is what I heard the librarian say and so it must be true as now Alyssa is officially one year older (and maybe slightly wiser, too).

Alyssa, your first little year has been filled with so much adventure. You came just in time for graduation and a 4 week stint in Provo.

Then you moved to Las Vegas. Oh the oppressive heat that made it hard to breathe. Oh the fun days with Lauren and Emma by the pool and at the park and just watching movies. Oh the drives to SLC and back and the plane rides when you weren't even 2 months old yet. Oh the aunts and uncles who came to visit and slept with one eye open to watch out for bugs. Mmmm...it seemed hard then. It wasn't all that bad. Maybe we'll go back someday. We lived...cockroaches and all...we made it through newborn he** (sensitized for those with pre-school eyes). We made it through suffocating heat. We made it through tile floors and black black streets.

4 months gone by and we moved again. This time the adventure took us on a 3,000 mile road trip. We saw Grandma and Grandpa Nelsen and Grandma and Grandpa Archibald and aunts [Claire and Maria] and uncles [James, Taylor, Jacob, Ben, Doug, and Porter]. We saw rainy rainy storms and rabid squirrels. We spent 2 weeks living out of a suitcase and you didn't even know or care. You were still so small but we were sure that you were ready to walk and talk...now I know better.

And here we are. Delaware. 7 months come and gone. You walk now, bang your lolly sticks together, pick up cigarette butts off the road, sleep through the night, flip through books, suck your thumb and play with the ties on your soft pink blanket. You love your food...hot dogs, apple sauce, oranges, grapes, cheese, apple juice, chicken nuggets, and fruit loops. MMM...you would eat ALL day if I let you. Just last Sunday while all the other kids in nursery were playing you sat by yourself drinking your water and eating your goldfish...{ain't nothing better}. You play outside on the little porch. You take apart computers with daddy. You love your shoes and your once despised bouncer.

You are fun and vivacious. We love spending [almost] every minute with you. We are excited for another year or growth and development. We hope that hair stays red and that the thumb sucking eventually stops. You are our greatest joy. We love you!

Happy Easter!

Easter is so lovely! It's spring and the weather seems to match the hope that Christ brings to the world as we remember His resurrection.

We had a little egg hunt. Erik taught Alyssa how to pick up eggs, bring them to him, and then eat the fruit snack inside of them. We tried some raisins on Easter to give her some variety, but it was clearly not what she wanted. She loves her eggs and still finds them and hopes that there will be a treat inside them, though more often than not, she is disappointed.

We celebrated Easter in style...if you consider matching outfits to be style. Awhile ago I started sewing. I got free fabric from freecycle and my mind started churning out ideas of what Easter outfits it could make. We ended up with a dress and a skirt. Erik's tie also matched. Perhaps yards of free fabric is dangerous for me, but I had a lot of fun making everything and it mostly turned out better than I anticipated! Thank goodness for freeeeee tutorials online!

Not bad for using a self timer in the woods...
Happy Easter and Happy Spring!

Spring Break at Longwood Gardens

Erik had a spring break a couple of weeks ago. One day we went to Longwood Gardens. We saw some geese that were slightly aggressive (as seen in the video). The spring bulbs were up and beautiful! It was a little colder than we expected, but we still got some fun pictures.

Alyssa and Erik with the goose.

I love the sky in these pictures.

Alyssa has a secret in this picture. It's in her left hand...

Did you figure out what it is? Yes. It's a dead worm.
Spring is lasting FOREVER here. I love it most of the time. Some days it is a little colder than I anticipate, but it is mostly beautiful!
